The Turkey Pro Sez: "Attracting
songbirds to your property or area you hunt is a fun and rewarding hobby. Chickadees are easy to attract for even novice
"birders". The Secret is the nesting box. This
"Slab" Nest Box, when
properly located, will surpass other boxes in attracting and holding Chickadees because of
its natural, weathered look. The birds take to it much
more quickly.
These little birds speak
their name and do acrobatic stunts on tree branches to the
delight of all bird watchers. Four species of Chickadee use nesting boxes.
The Black-Capped Chickadee lives
in northern and most Midwestern states as well as in most of Canada. Identify it
with its black cap and bib and white cheeks. The Carolina
Chickadee, which looks very similar, lives in the southeast
quarter of the U.S.A. and has a higher, faster version of the
"chick-a-dee-dee-dee" call. The Mountain
Chickadee has a white "eyebrow" through its black
cap and lives in and west of the Rocky Mountains. The Chestnut-Backed
Chickadee has a chestnut-brown back and a brown cap and lives
in the northwest and along the California coast. The Black-Capped and Carolina
Chickadees prefer mixed forests, open woodlands and suburban areas, while their western
cousins prefer coniferous forests.
Nest Boxes can be located almost
anywhere. Your "Slab" Nest Box will be much
more acceptable to Chickadees if you place a small amount of sawdust or wood chips inside
the box. They will work to remove some of it before nesting there, which to
them appears to be a hole in a rotting tree, which is a preferred natural nesting site.
Birding is a great
wildlife, hands-on project that will be enjoyed by all members of your family.
Start with a "Slab" Nest Box for instant success."
